Health and Safety Policy for Garden Clearance Sydenham
Our organisation is committed to delivering safe, reliable garden clearance and rubbish removal services across the service area. This Health and Safety policy sets out the principles, responsibilities and controls which ensure that garden waste clearance, vegetation removal and general rubbish collection are carried out with minimal risk to employees, contractors, visitors and the public. The policy applies to all operations conducted by the garden clearance team and associated service providers, including bulky waste collection, green waste disposal and clearance of debris from residential and communal grounds.Scope and Objectives
The objective of this policy is to create a consistent framework for safe working methods in all aspects of our garden clearance service. We will identify hazards, assess risks and implement proportionate controls so our rubbish company service area routines reduce injury and environmental harm. Prevention, protection and compliance are the cornerstones: preventing incidents, protecting people and property, and complying with applicable health and safety standards.
Responsibilities and Accountability
Management will ensure that resources, training and instruction are available and maintained. Supervisors are accountable for daily risk assessments and for ensuring that operatives follow safe systems of work. Every operative engaged in garden clearance, green waste removal or site tidy services has a duty to report hazards, near misses and unsafe conditions immediately. Contractors working with our rubbish removal teams must be able to demonstrate equivalent safety standards before commencing work.Risk Assessment and Safe Systems
Risk assessments will be carried out for all tasks including hedge cutting, tree pruning, compost and soil handling, lifting and transporting bulky items, and removal of potentially hazardous waste. Assessments will be reviewed when conditions change or when new equipment is introduced. Controls include the selection of appropriate PPE, safe lifting techniques, traffic management for vehicle access, and secure loading procedures for waste transfer and disposal in the wider rubbish company service area.
Training, Competence and Supervision
All staff undertaking garden clearance and rubbish collection will receive training relevant to their role: safe use of hand tools and powered equipment, manual handling, emergency response and waste segregation. Competence will be monitored through observation and periodic assessment. New employees and seasonal staff will work under close supervision until authorised to operate independently. Clear records will be kept to demonstrate training and competence across our garden waste clearance teams.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Equipment Management
- PPE such as gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing, chainsaw trousers where required, and steel-toe boots will be provided and maintained.
- Equipment inspections and maintenance schedules will be implemented for vehicles, trailers, chippers and cutting tools to prevent mechanical failures that could lead to accidents.
- Defective equipment will be removed from service and reported immediately to supervisors.
Hazardous Materials and Waste Segregation Garden clearance teams may encounter hazardous materials such as asbestos-containing debris, chemical containers, or contaminated soil. Any suspect hazardous waste must be isolated, reported and handled by trained personnel in line with safe disposal protocols. Our rubbish removal policy emphasises correct segregation of green waste, recyclable materials and general rubbish to minimise cross-contamination and to support responsible disposal across the service area.
Emergency Procedures and Incident Reporting
Emergency response plans are in place for incidents including injury, vehicle collisions, fires and spillage. First aid kits and trained first aiders will be available on site or in vehicles. All incidents, near misses and safety concerns must be reported and recorded promptly so that appropriate corrective actions are taken and lessons learned are shared across the organisation. Investigation outcomes will inform revisions to this Health and Safety policy and to operational procedures.
